If your child is fascinated by wildlife, species and the natural world, the Level 2 Award in Natural History & Conservation gives that interest somewhere to go.
Developed with Open Awards, learners will explore Natural History, ecology and conservation through flexible online learning and practical fieldwork, building a portfolio of evidence rather than sitting traditional written exams.
Throughout the qualification, learners will:
Explore wildlife, habitats, ecology and biodiversity
Develop species identification and field recording skills
Use recognised Natural History survey techniques
Carry out practical field investigations
Explore conservation and environmental challenges
Build their own Natural History Portfolio
Learners progress from noticing and identifying nature to investigating how it works and understanding how it can be protected.
Natural History can't be studied entirely from behind a screen.
The qualification combines flexible online study with practical activities, local fieldwork, tutor support and resources to guide learners through their investigations.
Fieldwork can be completed through organised opportunities or guided investigations in the learner's local environment. Parents won't be expected to teach the course or design activities themselves. Adventure Green will provide the guidance needed along the way.
Instead of preparing for traditional written exams, learners demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills throughout the qualification.
Evidence can include fieldwork, species records, investigations, conservation activities, data, photographs and reflections, all contributing towards their Natural History Portfolio.
The assessment method is different, but the Level 2 expectations remain the same.
By the end of the qualification, learners will have:
A nationally recognised Level 2 qualification
A deeper understanding of Natural History, ecology and conservation
Practical experience of species identification, fieldwork and scientific investigation
A substantial Natural History Portfolio
Transferable skills in observation, research, analysis and independent enquiry
A foundation for further environmental study, volunteering and future green pathways
For some young people, this will be an opportunity to take an existing fascination with the natural world further. For others, it could be the beginning of a much longer journey into Natural History, ecology, conservation or sustainability.
