The Level 2 Certifcate in Natural History & Conservation is being developed with Open Awards for young people who want to take their interest in wildlife and the natural world further.
Learners will explore Natural History, ecology, biodiversity and conservation while developing practical skills in observation, species identification, field recording and scientific investigation.
And because Natural History can't be studied entirely from behind a screen, practical fieldwork will be a core part of the qualification.
Learners will take what they've learned online into their local environment to observe, investigate and begin understanding the natural world for themselves.
We train passionate, creative young thinkers – including those whose talents and perspectives can be overlooked in traditional education – to play their part in creating a sustainable future.
Develop meaningful knowledge of wildlife, ecology, biodiversity and conservation while working towards a Level 2 qualification.
Learners won't simply read about Natural History. They'll get outside to identify species, investigate habitats, collect data and put their learning into practice.
Rather than relying on traditional written exams, learners demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills through fieldwork, investigations, conservation activities and portfolio evidence.
Practical fieldwork is a core part of the qualification, but that doesn't mean travelling to a particular location on fixed dates.
Learners will be able to complete fieldwork through organised field study opportunities or equivalent guided investigations within their own local environment.
That could mean studying wildlife in a garden, local park, woodland, wetland, urban green space or coastal habitat.
And parents won't be expected to become Natural History teachers. Adventure Green will provide the course content, activities and Field Study Guide needed to support learners through their practical work.
The qualification may be a good fit if your child:
is aged 12+
has a strong interest in wildlife, nature, ecology or conservation
enjoys observing and investigating the natural world
learns well through practical, hands-on or project-based study
is home educated or following a flexible educational pathway
would benefit from portfolio-based assessment rather than traditional written exams
wants to progress from another Adventure Green environmental qualification
is interested in further environmental study, volunteering or a future green pathway
Learners don't need to have completed another Adventure Green qualification first.
Throughout the qualification, learners will progress through a Natural History journey:
Notice - Identify - Understand - Investigate - Protect - Steward
They'll learn to observe and identify wildlife, understand habitats and ecological relationships, use scientific fieldwork techniques and explore the pressures facing the natural world.
As the course progresses, they'll apply that knowledge through conservation action, citizen science and independent investigation, gradually building a Natural History Portfolio that records what they've discovered and how their skills have developed.
